Deep reading is the process of reading beyond the words written on the page. It is about taking the ideas, principles and concepts you've been given and questioning them. While deep reading you will begin to reflect as well as introspect. You should look within yourself and beyond yourself whether that regards your background, knowledge or situation. It is about confronting your lack of knowledge and not simply accepting the information you are reading. The aim is to expand yourself and question the facts you read. It is about welcoming cognitive dissonance and exploring it.

How can you create a playful environment for adults to enjoy deep reading?

The first playful environment will take place in the form of a digital shared document called EtherPad. EtherPad is an open-source, web-based collaborative real-time editor, allowing authors to simultaneously edit a text document, and see all of the participants' edits in real-time, with the ability to display each author's text in their own colour. Having used EtherPad in the past to engage in group annotations I know that it brings a playful aspect to reading a text and leads to discovering aspects of the text you might not have noticed before.
